The principle of conditional response underpins the behaviour modification called ‘classical conditioning’, which is at the heart of behaviourism. Behaviourists tend to use the term ‘conditioning’ instead of ‘learning’ to indicate that the subject is changed by external rather than cognitive events. The theory of classical conditioning can be used to explain how people learn a variety of involuntary responses, especially those associated with physiological functioning or the emotions. For example, most people experience darkness as an unconditional stimulus for going to sleep; therefore, in particular environmental settings, darkness may elicit a ‘go-to-sleep’ response.

When learners are assessed according to criteria, however, it is possible that all could meet the criteria and be judged as performing at a satisfactory level. This shift in assessment practices is therefore clearly of benefit to learners. Behaviourist principles are useful as part of formative assessment, which is a kind of assessment designed to provide feedback for the learner and teacher, rather than to record or certify achievement. Formative assessment may be seen as a form of reinforcement, designed to motivate and encourage learners.
