Fiction. "KANGAROO is a singular of the main devastating, the main terrifying hilarity. It belongs within the style of satire; besides the fact that, its web impression is neither revulsion on the method nor comedian aid, yet natural metaphysical terror. This impact has much less to do with the author's relatively apocalyptical worldview as such than with the standard of his ear. Aleshkovsky, whose attractiveness in Russia as a songwriter is intensely excessive (in truth, a few of his songs are a part of nationwide folklore), hears the language like a prodigy. The hero of KANGAROO is a pickpocket whose occupation spans the full heritage of Soviet Russia, and the unconventional is an epic yarn spun out within the foulest of language, for which both 'slang' of 'argot' fails as definition' (Joseph Brodsky). "The wonderful influence of a CANDIDE, a SCHWEIK, a 1984. .. Alehkovsky's unique energy is that he has a devastating humorousness. .. the following, for the 1st time i do know of, a Russian has stripped away the sonorities of Soviet background to spotlight its absurdity from a regular, human element of view" (New York Times). 5/18/99
One morning in 1949, Fan Fanych, alias Etcetera, is summoned from his Moscow house to KGB headquarters, the place he's proficient that he'll be charged with a criminal offense extra heinous than any mere guy may perhaps ever devise. Every second within the nightmarish and hilarious account that follows lives as much as the absurdity of this accusation. A seductive KGB agent makes an attempt to persuade Fan Fanych that he's a kangaroo; he unearths himself within the dock at a staggering express trial; is shipped to a camp jam-packed with committed previous Bolsheviks pathetically trying to hold their ideals within the face of each new atrocity; encounters Hitler in Berlin and Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin at Yalta, the place he's privileged to witness the well-known convention because it was once particularly conducted.
Kangaroo is a savage, detoxing satire during which Yuz Aleshkovsky confronts the hypocrisy, the cruelty, and the tragic failure of the Soviet regime. His phantasmagoria is devoted to fact, for--as Dostoevsky knew--it is very unlikely for "realism" to painting a society whose corruption is actually fantastic.

It is no coincidence that he overlapped the time period of Gulliver舗s Travels, 1699-1715, with the period of his own service in England up to the treason trial of his employers, Robert Harley, the earl of Oxford, and Henry St. John, Viscount Bolingbroke. All his life Swift deeply resented that his initial forays into politics had gone so badly for him and, ultimately, for those whose support he needed. Many of Gulliver舗s adventures in the Travels are enmeshed in the particular controversies of the period that Swift experienced directly, and though interest in these matters among today舗s readers may prove negligible, it is fair to say that the general context for Gulliver舗s Travels is disappointment.
I wrote for their amendment, and not their approbation. The united praise of the whole race would be of less consequence to me, than the neighing of those two degenerate Houyhnhnms I keep in my stable; because from these, degenerate as they are, I still improve in some virtues without any mixture of vice. Do these miserable animals presume to think, that I am so degenerated as to defend my veracity? Yahoo as I am, it is well known through all Houyhnhnmland, that, by the instructions and example of my illustrious master, I was able in the compass of two years (although I confess with the utmost difficulty) to remove that infernal habit of lying, shuffling, deceiving, and equivocating, so deeply rooted in the very souls of all my species; especially the Europeans.
139). And what does Gulliver do in this instance? Almost stupidly, he complains of the King舗s 舠narrow principles舡 (p. 139), and in these circumstances readers can only bemoan those principles Gulliver considers broad. Yet Gulliver at his best can display an almost eloquent satiric logic, as in his definition of war and soldiery to his Master Houyhnhnm: 舠A solider is a Yahoo hired to kill in cold blood as many of his own species; who have never offended him, as possibly he can舡 (p. 247). There are other instances when Gulliver舗s insight into institutions or practices are indistinguishable from Swift舗s.
